Hello Everyone!
Today we will be having a class discussion on As I Lay Dying. I will help facilitate discussion by providing discussion questions to about five group leaders. These are just guiding questions. I want to make sure everyone has time to share their initial reactions of the book and answer any questions if there are any. I also wanted to let everyone know that there will be a supervisor in class today to observe me.
Remember to keep up on the tentative reading schedule I made. So be sure to read pages 35-66 for next class.
As promised, here is the list of vocabulary words for Friday's test:
sarcasm
satire
semantics
style
subject complement
subordinate clause
syllogism
symbol/symbolism
synecdoche
synesthesia
Do not forget that you have to still study the SAT Vocabulary- Group 3

ReplyDeleteCharacter discussion post:
ReplyDeleteOur group, Gaelynn, Michelle, Sam, Valerie, and Danielle has Vardaman.
So far we've been albe to learn that he is very upset about his mother's death and he blames it on Peabody. We've also learned that he's left alone a lot: people don't really pay much attention to him, they leave him out of things. But people do have some amount of sympathy for him because of this. From the way he talks we've noticed that he's kind of on the brink of insanity. Things he says don't make sense, and he's disturbed and on the verge of having a mental break down.
Maggie, Aireanna, Erin, Nadia and Emma have the character Dewey Dell. We discussed that Dewey is very insecure but loyal to her family. She is concerned and stressed about her pregnancy. She is also sad about her mother dieing.
ReplyDeleteOur group: Bolan, Thomas, Zachary Gilbert-Mahoney have the character Anse.
ReplyDeleteAnse is the father Cash, Darl, Vardaman, and Dewey Dell, and widower of Addie. Although he cares for his family, he works the least out of the entire family (you could say he's a bread winner, who ain't got no bread), due to some fear that he will die if he sweats, since he nearly died of a fever as a child. So far, we have determined that he is the least interesting character, and it is yet to be decided whether or not his reasons for forcing his family to work for him is due to legitimate fear or laziness. Possible some third thing.
Kennethea Wilson, Brianna Corbitt, Whitney White, Shayla Sanders assigned to the character Cash.
ReplyDeleteIn a nut shell we discussed a couple key points about this character. So far in the book he has shown a great interest in building and carpentry. It is revealed that his mindset is founded on this principles of building; almost like an operated machine. Because this character is based on building, a symbol that comes across to us is the coffin that he is building. It symbolizes the inevitable death of his mother and how in tune with carpentry he is. Cash relentlessly compares tools or his profession to his everyday life in some form or another.

Here's what we know about Jewel so far:
ReplyDelete-He's good with horses.
-He's an illegitimate child (I don't think any of the characters have said it so far but it's been implied and we discussed it in class, so I assumed it's kosher to include in the list.)
-He is regarded as Addie's favourite.
-He's tall.
-He's a lady's man...
-He's quite angry.
I should start writing these things down.
ReplyDeleteAlex, Aubrey, Tatiana and Chastity:
CORA:
We felt that Cora was a devout Christian when she was initially introduced. She feels bad for Addie, and feels that her family is terrible (with the exception of Darl.) She's a gossip with her friends, the topic usually being the Bundrens.
TULL:
Tull is Cora's husband, and we felt he was resentful of Anse's laziness, as he stated in his chapter that he felt as though he'd helped Anse for too long to just abandon him.
PEABODY:
Peabody's a doctor, and is overweight and obnoxious (as evident from when he forced Vardaman to carry him up the mountain.)
ADDIE:
Is dying. She's the mother of the Bundren children and wife to Anse. She feels lonely due to her children and husband being...well, failures at life, and represents the recurring theme of loneliness, death and isolation.
