Discussion of the Harlem Renaissance
Let’s read Richard Wright’s review which has been given to you as well as posted to the class blog. Do you agree with Wright’s review of Hurston’s work? Let’s talk character development. How does Hurston “create” Janie?

Veronica Mariano 12/4/13 Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
ReplyDeleteI would like to make FBI files about some of the main characters. Ethan thinks this is a good idea as long as I have enough textual evidence. I would also like to compose a song on Garage Band representing Janie's life. Ethan told me to also include a written explanation of this composition.
sounds like a great idea

DeleteFrances Brown, 12/3/13, the title of the novel for this project is Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. For my two creative projects I am going to do create a diary in Janie's perspective that will relate to important events int he book. For my second creative project I am going to write a monologue in the perspective of Joe Sparks that will illustrate his attitude towards Janie and they way she acts with him. My partner Carly Swift-Horth think this is a good idea for me since I am a creative writing major (so is she). She hopes I will use all of the skills we have learned in creative writing combined with English literary devices.

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
I would like to do a poem relating to a theme(s) in the novel, possibly including indirect references of the novel. Secondly, I would like to make a newspaper about events occurring in the novel, including the revitalization of Eatonville. Veronica thinks the poem would be beautiful, and it is a great idea since I am a creative writing major. She thinks the newspaper may be boring, but has potential to be an A project.

Make postcards from some of the places in the book.
Irene said I should draw the first scene of her walking into Eatonville.

ReplyDeleteMy two choices for my multi-genre project are to compose a piece and write a poem that explains Janie's journey throughout the novel. My lovely partner Frances suggested that the poem no directly mention the names of characters but instead have it be a giant metaphor, which I hadn't thought about until she said that. I think that's a pretty good idea. The composition will be only on piano and it won't be too long, but it will definitely get across the main emotions of Janie's journey.

One part of my creative project is reenacting the checkers scene with Irene. She will be playing Janie, and I will be playing Tea Cake. My second part will be a prezi that explains Janie's life throughout the story, and also explains how certain events shaped Janie and her relationships.

My choices are to write a poem and to make a prezi of Janie's life and all of her life's journey. My partner Deja said that I focus my poem more on a specific moment in Janie's life. Therefore I am going to do a poem on when Janie started to blossom and grow into a woman. My prezi is going to be like a time line of what happened to Janie throughout her life and all of the struggles and triumphs that she went through. Deja says that this is a good idea and that if I do it right that it should turn out as I plan on it to.
The two multi-genre projects I will be doing are a journal entry from the point of view of Janie and an obituary for Tea Cake. Jaida has told me that I could maybe connect both pieces of writing in some way and that they are both good ideas.

"Their Eyes Were Watching God" - Zora Neale Hurston
Project 1: Draw Janie walking through the woods when she returns to town.
Project 2: A poem about the death of Tea Cake.
My partner Molly told me to draw Janie in colored pencil. Molly also told me to make the poem very emotional.

ReplyDeleteProject 1: Journal entries in Janie's perspective focusing on major life events (ex. deaths, marriages, pear tree scene, etc.)
Jackson thinks this is a good idea and that I should find common themes to incoorperate within the entries.

Their Eyes Are Watching God
Alyssia says that the dance I plan to do with Hannah and Laura is a good idea and is very creative.
Ms. Gamzon says that my idea for performing a monologue is very interesting and she looks forward to seeing what i come up with.
For the dance piece we plan to show the changes Janie goes through throughout the novel and how the events of her life have lead to the person she becomes by the end of the novel.

Project 1: Newspaper for Eatonvile
Project 2: Garageband composition
Gena says that the newspaper is a good idea and for the garage band composition I should write about the changes that Janie goes through in her life.
I would like to replace the newspaper with a sock puppet show

Their Eyes Were Watching God
Partner-Alice Doeblin
I am planning on doing a newspaper about the events in Eatonville and a poem. Alice suggested that maybe I could write the poem from the perspective of Jody after he has died, and how he feels about Janie's new relationship with Tea Cake.

Their Eyes Were Watching God
I plan to do a collaborative newspaper with Nathan Pembrook and then a timeline of key events from each chapter on my own. The newspaper will include a front page story about an event which occurred in Eatonville and other features which will relate to Eatonville and other aspects of the novel. Nate and I both thought that the newspaper would be fun, but would also relate very well to novel and would be educational. The timeline would include summaries of key events, maybe some quotes which embody specific chapters, and perhaps some picture which would make the timeline even more creative. Nate said that the timeline would be an enjoyable project to make and would be very informative. He also said that it would be an easier way for people to understand the events of the novel.

"Their Eyes Were Watching God"
1) Create a poem on an artistic level using different colored paper and letters on each background. The poem will be about the ethnic nature of persons and how they effect individuals placement in society; also how others perceive them as a human being (will not only included ethnic standards of black individuals or white).
2) Form a fake news paper which has racial slurs written all over it and then so advertisements; this will show how truly white male heterosexual the news paper is and lacks to identify with other races.
