Chasing Holden
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH8SLHWXavo&feature=related
• Considering Holden’s thinking, and his perception about being a child
and adult, do you think that these two times are separate as he thinks
of them to be? And if yes, where does he belong to?
• Throughout the novel, Holden keeps meeting and coming across
various people. Do we see any trend, or pattern, or simply a change in
the way he interacts as the story evolves? If you think yes, on what
basis you can say so. And also tell how his interaction with women,
children, adults and peers becomes as story develops.
• Holden often acts and believes himself like saint, identifying and
blaming about the strangeness and hypocrisy everywhere around. Do you
think Holden is perfect, and the way he really wishes to be? Have there
been moments when he is doing the same what he criticizes others of? Do
these instances tell anything about his psychological state?
• Holden longs for being close and developing relationships with
other humans. Talk about the various kinds of relationships he tries to
develop and the different types of intimacy. How do his sexual
encounters vary from his non sexual instances? What is the significance
of sexuality in the book?
• One of the strangest interactions Holden has had was a night at Mr
Antolini’s place. What can you make out of Antolini’s behaviors and
action? Did he try making a pass at him? What is the importance of his
actions? Do these actions relate to Antolini’s role, a person who was
trying to help Holden from taking a fall?
