The AP English Language and Composition course is designed to enable students to become skilled readers and writers in diverse genres and modes of composition. As stated in the Advanced Placement Course Description, the purpose of the Language and Composition course is “to enable students to read complex texts with understanding and to write papers of sufficient richness and complexity to communicate effectively with mature readers” (The College Board, May 2007, May 2008, p.6).
I would agree with this statement using some eloquent thesis thing. I'd relate it to 'necessity is the mother of invention.' I'd support it with: -America after Pearl Harbor -The Civil Rights movement -Hunger Games -VINCENT VAN GOUH
I AGREE WITH THE STATEMENT During times of adversity, hidden talents tend to be brought out in people
Beethoven suffered through the pain of becoming deaf which pushed him to compose beautiful music and to fight his deafness
In The Hunger Games, Katniss was very poor and was forced to hunt in the woods to provide for her family, this caused her to become a skilled archer and help her win the hunger games.
The people of france lived in poverty before the times of the French revolution, this caused them to rebel and form a republic that rules France today
THe first thing that came to my mind was artists who have become famous and renowned not only in spite of their mental illness, but because of it. Sylvia Plath and Vincent Van Gogh are two of many artists that come to mind. Frida Kahlo was was able to paint so much because of serious injuries she sustained and her injuries inspired some of her most famous paintings. Other stuff too. I need more diverse examples that don't pertain to art.
Humans are capable of quite amazing things, from leading nations to making amazing scientific discoveries to running marathons for days on end; with the proper motivation. Necessity happens to be a great motivator, whether it’s the negative pressure of struggling to survive, or the positive dreams and desires that inhabit the minds of those who cannot descend any lower, adversity pushes people to bring out all their talents to overcome and succeed. Even when the odds are not in the favor of the individual or the group, those who put in all their effort to overcome will either succeed, or as Theodore Roosevelt put it in his “man in the arena speech”, “fail greatly”.
Examples I would use:
Hari Seldon from "prelude to foundation" Wars, in general Nikola tesla
In history, author Charles Dickens wrote many famous novels, including some revolving around social classes. He may not have been able to write so successfully if he had not been poor and had not grown up in poverty. In the book perks of being a wall flower Charlie may not have been so talented and such a good friend if he hadn’t been clinically depressed, because it made him an observer and an individual. Personally, bad times or experiences directly produce talent. When I am upset I draw my best when I’m happy I have a harder time coming up with ideas. Therefore there’s a direct relationship between my adversity and my talent.
The quote by Horace: “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant,” is very true, in that people are often pushed to do their best by unfortunate circumstances. In Suzanne Collins’s trilogy of The Hunger Games, the main character Katniss finds new strength in the arena of the Hunger Games. President Barack Obama came out of hard childhood, with his father dying when Barack was young, his mother raised him, and yet he went on to Harvard Law school and became the first Black President of the United States of America.
in the great gatsby, gatsby rises above adversity because he was born to a poor family and then became rich and had life that most people wanted. in secret life of the american teenager amy juergens rises above adversity by staying in high school and maintaining a job while raising her son. in my own life i had an erg test and even with my fear of ergs i kept up with my people and i was not the slowest one on the team anymore.
People with disabilities and those who are faced with intense challenges and difficulties fight their way to the city of champions! - Lord of the Rings (my boi Samwise) - Winston Churchill - Stephen Hawking
One of the first people to come to mind was Jean-Michel Basquiat. He was an artist who ran away as a teenager and was homeless for several years. Then he started selling work that he painted on salvaged materials that he found on the streets and eventually became one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th Century.
I agree with this quote for 3 reasons... 1. When someone is faced with a loss the turn to different things to get their mind of death... Katniss Everdeen found her skill with a bow and arrow after her father death when she was needed to provide for her family. 2. Fredrick Douglas 3. Amy Winehouse
Adversity is the gateway to realizing hidden talents. African Americans had been pushed through segregation, poverty, slavery, and their freedom has become the symbol of equal rights. They had suffered in order for our society to understand the idea of equality and be able to look at everyone the same. Boston, Massachusetts bombings recently at the marathon had put many people through living hell, it awakened the runners and spectators of the marathon to a terrorist attack. People had given lots of blood to those injured, and others contributed copious amounts of money to the medical bills of people that had been seriously hurt. This event showed how Americans can help one another. In the novel Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie has a rough life with depression and anxiety. He lives through high school with these problems, and he takes time and discomfort to find out who his real friends are. Once he discovers them, he becomes enlightened and realizes how to feel infinite and truly enjoy life.
I would defend Horace's quote and say that hardship can urge people to be the best that they can be so that they can get to a place of normalcy and success.
Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow. Gone With the Wind Vincent van Gogh
i agree with this quote for these 3 reasons 1. Guy Laliberte(cirque du soliel founder) grew up in a family with very little money, and struggled through his childhood. He then turned to street performing and eventually founded cirque du soliel. If he didnt grow up with adversity, he may not have had the same dream which made him so much money. 2. divorce with parents, children turn to sports/activities for distraction 3.music artists such as christina aguilera in the movie burlesque
